UoN First Aid Society
(Formally St John Ambulance LINKS)
Frequently Asked Questions
We understand there is a lot of information to take in at once when you first think of joining our society, and even once you're a member there are probably many questions you would like answered, so we've compiled a list of the most commonly asked questions by prospective and current members!
Do I need any previous First Aid or medical experience?
Nope! If you do have experience, that's great, but we are an organisation based on diversity and recognise that not everyone will be trained in First Aid. We provide training and First Aid opportunities whatever level of competency you're at when you join!
How does it work?
St. John LINKS is the collective name for the two sections that LINKS has to it; the first section is Student Union side and the second is the St. John Ambulance Unit. They are quite a bit different but are very much affiliated with each other.
The Student Union side of St. John LINKS:
The St. John LINKS committee and other experience first aiders teach members first aid every Tuesday in term time. This is the full First Aid course that St. John offers but it's important to note that these sessions will not gain you a First Aid qualification and will not lead to being able to volunteer on duties. As a society we run many socials throughout the year and often go down to Mooch (SU bar) after training.
The St. John Ambulance Unit side of St. John LINKS:
Units in St. John are made up of members who volunteer to provide first aid cover at events throughout the county. In 2013 there was a big regional shake up of how St. John was organised and hence forth our unit is now Nottingham Universities LINKS, which includes both University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University (this unit is also available to all students in higher education establishments and the staff). By joining the unit as well as the SU will enable you to gain qualifications and go out to volunteer. We cover University, regional and national events.
Training at the unit starts on tenth of october 2010 and will be fortnightly on Mondays.

How do I join?
You can join the society online through the SU website, or in person in the Student Activities room, located on the B Floor, opposite the Print Shop, in the Portland Building on University Park Campus. For full instructions, click here.
What should I expect?
When joining the society, you can expect a high level of training, a chance to meet other individuals and all of the perks of being in a society, as well as a member of an organisation. We host frequent socials throughout the year, hold weekly training sessions led by students and ex-students and offer the oppurtunity to attend duties both on campus and in Nottingham. We ask that you volunteer some of your time with us at our duties. This will allow you to gain to experience and is another great way to meet new people!
